Students have always featured prominently in the OFF festival ever since it was first founded. This year will be no different, as five student teams, all from different arts disciplines, will immerse themselves in the world of opera via a hands-on approach: they will create an opera themselves. The results will be presented at Dutch National Opera & Ballet on Friday 11 and Saturday 12 March.
As was the case in previous years, each team will comprise a mix of students from various arts study programmes: composition, direction, dramaturgy, scenography and production. The teams will each create a short opera production lasting about fifteen minutes. These performances will deal with a range of relevant topics, from ecology, death and rebirth to shame and alienation.
The student teams will be supervised by opera director Sjaron Minailo, composer Meriç Artaç, scenographer Tatyana van Walsum and Dutch National Opera’s artistic and technical departments. This year, the performances will not be presented separately, but as a series, so that the audience will be able to see the work of all five teams.
We have collaborated with the students in a number of different ways, which has resulted in three different OFF Labs for this edition: Performing Arts, Visual Arts and Cultural Policy.
